What is Upcycling?

The aim of the project is to accelerate the adoption of circular business cases by SMEs to upcycle company waste into (secondary) resources at local level. (Click on the image to see the video.)

In the context of this project upcycling means transforming waste(d) materials, parts or materials into secondary resources as products, parts or materials of at least equal and preferably better technical, economical and societal quality. This should be done without burdening people and the environment with hazardous and harmful substances, add value and reduce the use of virgin materials in the process.

More about the project

The Upcycle Your Waste project that supports small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to turn their company waste into a valuable resource. Businesses can benefit significantly from circular approaches like waste material recovery and green procurement. But many SMEs lack the knowledge, resources and scale to make this transition on their own.

Upcycle Your Waste supports SMEs with a free programme to:

(1) Improve insight in company waste streams and corresponding circular business cases

(2) Increase knowledge and capacities on regulation, waste analysis, circular business cases and procurement

(3) Improve cooperation with other companies to organise collective upcycling of waste materials

(4) Test and demonstrate solutions and tools to increase resource efficiency

We specifically target 6 business districts. In these 6 districts we support SMEs to pool their waste flows and procure upcycling services to collectively put waste materials in the market as resources. This results in 6 demonstration pilots where we will test approaches for upcycling a range of different waste materials.

Other interested SMEs, local authorities and business support organisations can also benefit from the Upcycle Your Waste training programme, tools and other outputs, that will be freely available.

The 8 Upcycle Your Waste partners are local authorities, business support organisations and knowledge institutes from across the 2 Seas region from The Netherlands, France, Belgium and the United Kingdom that want to help companies to speed up their transition to circularity.

Project Outputs

The project outputs we are going to deliver are the demonstration pilots, protocols for SMEs on procurement for upcycling, training programmes and an upcycling guidance.

(1) Demonstration pilots – testing the implementation of circular business cases based on collective waste stream analysis, procurement and contracting of waste management.

(2) Protocol for SMEs on procurement for upcycling – showing how SMEs can design and organise collective procurement of waste services to introduce (innovative) circular solutions at local level.

(3) Training programme for SMEs on regulation, waste stream analysis, circular business cases and procurement.

(4) Upcycling Guidance for local authorities and business district managers on working with SMEs to adopt circular business cases.

Wat is upcycling?

Doel van het project is bedrijven te ondersteunen bij het omzetten van afval naar nieuwe grondstoffen. (Klik op de afbeelding om de video te bekijken)

In de context van dit project staat upcycling voor het hergebruiken van afvalmateriaal, delen daarvan of bepaalde materialen in ‘nieuwe’ grondstoffen met ten minste gelijkwaardige of -liever nog- betere technische, economische en sociale kwaliteit. Dit gebeurt zonder mens en milieu te belasten met gevaarlijke en schadelijke stoffen. Upcycling voegt waarde toe aan het oorspronkelijke materiaal en vermindert eveneens het gebruik van nieuw ontgonnen grondstoffen.

Meer over het project

Het Upcycle Your Waste-project ondersteunt kleine bedrijven om hun bedrijfsafval om te zetten in waardevolle grondstoffen. Dit kan door een circulaire aanpak, zoals hergebruik van afvalmaterialen, of door een groen aankoopbeleid. Voor veel bedrijven is het lastig deze stap te zetten, door een gebrek aan de juiste kennis of de schaalgrootte.

Upcycle Your Waste ondersteunt bedrijven met een gratis programma om:

(1) Een beter inzicht te krijgen in de afvalstroom  en de mogelijke circulaire businesscases.

(2) Kennis uit te breiden over regelgevingen, afvalanalyse, circulaire businesscases en aanbestedingsprocedures.

(3) Samenwerking met andere bedrijven te verbeteren en een gezamenlijk aan-/ en verkoopbeleid van afval in te richten.

(4) Oplossingen en toepassingen te testen om zo grondstoffenontginning te verbeteren.

We focussen ons op 6 specifieke pilotgebieden. In deze 6 gebieden ondersteunen we bedrijven om hun afval gezamenlijk op de markt te plaatsen als een grondstof.

Andere geïnteresseerde bedrijven, lokale autoriteiten en bedrijvenverenigingen kunnen ook gebruikmaken van een Upcycle Your Waste-trainingsprogramma, toepassingen en andere outputs die gratis beschikbaar zijn.

Projectoutputs

De opgeleverde outputs aan het einde van het project zijn: de circulaire cases in de pilotgebieden, de aanbestedingen voor upcycling, trainingsprogramma's en een upcyclingleidraad.

(1) Pilotregio’s – Testen van de ingevoerde circulaire businesscases gebaseerd op een collectieve afvalstroomanalyse, op de inkoop en contractering van afvalbeheer.

(2) Protocol voor bedrijven inzake inkoop van upcyclingmethodes – We tonen hoe bedrijven een collectief aankoopbeleid van afvaldiensten kunnen opstellen en organiseren en zo lokaal circulair gericht denken.

(3) Trainingsprogramma voor bedrijven over regelgeving, afvalstroomanalyse, circulaire businesscases en aankoopbeleid.

(4) Upcyclingleidraad voor lokale autoriteiten en bedrijventerreinmanagers over hoe bedrijven circulaire businesscases kunnen opstarten.
